WelcomeThis event is conceptual only at this stage. The venue chosen is considered to be the premier location in Australia for an event of this nature. It is located in the Scenic Rim area in Queensland, skirting the state border between New South Wales and Queensland. The Scenic Rim is the name given to the rim of an ancient volcano with a circumference of 200 kms of which Mt Warning at the centre, is the remnant of the central volcanic plug. When Captain James Cook sailed along the east coast of Australia in April 1770, he gave the name of Point Danger to that point along the coast which now sees the twin towns of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads straddling the border. Mt Warning was the name he gave to the peak which was the first point of land to catch the rays of the rising sun......thus warning of the impending daybreak. The area is set among World Heritage listed areas including the ancient Gondwana rain forests and boasts rugged mountain ranges, numerous waterfalls and stunning views. The start / finish of the event tentatively will be situated in the village of Numinbah on the Nerang-Murwillimbah road which is nestled between the Lamington and Springbrook plateaus. It is proposed that 100 km of the event be staged as an out and back type course from Numinbah to Binna Burra Mountain Retreat, along the Border track to O'Reilly's Rainforest Resort, back out to the rim, then onwards to Stinson Park, past the ill-fated Stinson wreck. That is approximately 50km which will give 100 km for the round trip. Stages between aid stations are approx 20 km. Map 1 - Numinbah-Binna Burra - O'Reillys - Stinson Park and return The second stage of the event, of a further 60 km, is proposed for the Springbrook plateau. This will go from Numinbah to Apple Tree Park on top of the Plateau. This goes past Waterfall Creek, climbing to the Woonoongoora walkers camp and then up the escarpment, climbing some 900 stairs and traversing more than 400 metres of altitude gain. From there the trail goes past the spectacular Purlingbrook falls to the first aid-station at the Springbrook Community Centre on the corner of Old School Road and Springbrook Road. The trail then continues along Springbrook Road to the Canyon Lookout with its magnificent views of the Gold Coast, some 50 km away. From there the trail proceeds down the cliff face to Blackfellows Falls, turn right and head south along the foot of the cliff past Twin Falls. From there, proceed on the Warrie circuit thence past The Pinnacle and on to Fairview Mountain, emerging on Mt Nimmel Road and aid station 2. From there proceed to the Mudgeeraba-Springbrook Road, past Pollies Kitchen thence over Page's Pinnacle and back to Numinbah Valley. Map 2 - Numinbah - Springbrook - Fairview Mtn - Pages Pinnacle - Numinbah Much planning needs to be done and approvals obtained before the race can proceed. A date for the race will be announced as soon as possible. For a selection of pics of the area, see photo gallery.
